About Lois Lo: My Journey to Becoming a Jeweller

My journey to becoming a jeweller wasn't a straight-forward one. I first thought I'd be a product designer. But during my foundation year at University Arts London (UAL), I had a strong desire to make things with my hands. That's when jewellery felt like the perfect fit.

Central Saint Martins (CSM) is where I really began exploring contemporary jewellery. I wanted to explore new ways of doing things and push past old traditions. My interest in innovation in jewellery was brought to life during a workshop with Michael Milloy. A workshop that introduced me to "creative stone setting" and a technique that I still use today.

When I started Lois Lo, I wanted to do things differently. Instead of focusing on the value of the material (precious metals or rare gems), I chose to look at innovation in craft. I want people to value the craftsmanship of my work not just the value of the material I use.

Innovation in craft

The strength of stainless steel lets me create bold, architectural forms and unique settings that aren't possible with softer precious metals. Changing the relationship between stone and metal is central to my work. I carefully carve directly into gemstones and use laser welding to create strong creative settings with stainless steel.

I’m pleased that my unique approach to jewellery design hasn’t gone unnoticed: I was proud to win gold for laser technology and silver for creative setting at the prestigious Goldsmiths' Company awards 2024.
